In January, the Men's Club provided the breakfast for the Sisterhood and Congregation Meeting. These guys always turn out a fantastic breakfast and have fun being chefs for a day.
It was great to welcome several new participants this year!
Siblings got ready to participate in the Havdalah ceremony. Havdalah is when we separate Shabbat from the rest of the week, by experiencing the grape juice, spices and candlelight once more.
This year, divisive politics even touched us at our Religious School on Inaugural Weekend! In response to worldwide marches, the students learned about many Jewish activists who were exercising their rights to voice their concerns by protesting in this free country.
Students came up with their own posters to promote kindness and the improvement of the world. Tikkun Olam means 'repairing the world'.
Here are some of the posters that the students were thinking about.
Children respond to stress in different ways. Art has always been a healthy way for people to process change.
Over the next several sessions, the children studied more activist Jewish celebrities, and the culminating activity was to make pastel portraits of the ones who interested them.
Jack Black....a celebrity, Jewish and an activist! Who Nu? This portrait was done with pastels.
Another Jewish activist, Jazz Jennings, speaks out on transgender youth.
This was done by a 13 year old boy...of Daveed Diggs, from the play 'Hamilton'! This really looks like Mr. Diggs.
This is a portrait of Shia Lebeouf mounted on a specially decorated frame that reflects Mr. laBeouf's cause.
The children had looked into short bios of many Jewish celebrities, and the Binei Mitzvah students may even use this lesson to look further for their required research project.
This frame had a vine around it...
Margie Edelman does a wonderful job as our PreK/K and Cultural Arts teacher. She consistently comes up with thoughtful lessons that tap into our childrens' creative energies and talents, and always raises the bar to make
them THINK!
Rabbi Stephen Goodman and Rabbi Linda Henry Goodman had a great time at the Pasta 4Shul event hat was held on Saturday, February 11th in our Social Hall.
The Edelman family came to the Pasta 4 Shul and looked wonderful!
Elaine and Carol took some chances on the many excellent raffles.
Some lucky winners went home with a prize.
One table of happy attendees had fun socializing.
This Pasta 4Shul dinner was coordinated by Lorin DeRosa, who also took these great photos! Thank you, Lorin.
Ms. Margie Edelman and Mrs. Krupen also helped Rabbi Goodman and Cantor Lavrunchuk run the yearly Tu B'Shvat Seder on the weekend before the February break. (That's the holiday where Jews celebrate the gift of trees and their importance in our lives.... in case you are ever on Jeopardy and the topic is 'obscure Jewish holidays').😏
The next Jewish holiday coming up is PURIM! Please RSVP for the Saturday, March 11th, Purim Pizza Party and Megillah Reading!!!!!! It begins at 6:15! Wear costumes, because everyone gets a medal or a prize! Adults wearing costumes get extra credit! Seriously, do not miss this evening, it's the best event of the year and it is FREE.
